If your Captain was disregarding SOPs, what would you do about it?
There might be an underlying reason that SOPs were not being adhered to, for example insidious incapacitation, so it’s important not to jump to a quick conclusions. In the event of it being due to incapacitation, assume control of the aircraft and alert the Cabin Crew for help.
However, if SOPs are being breached for no apparent reason, there are generally three levels of intervention. These are:
· Tell me what I’m doing wrong
· Tell me how to correct (do) it
· Do it for me.
If SOPs were being deliberately disregarding in normal circumstances and without discussion, you might intervene and explain the importance of SOPs and respectfully request that they are adhered to as you are uncomfortable with them not being used.
If they continued to be blatantly disregarded, you would tell them what they should be doing. If they resist, consider reporting an incident to a manager and filing a safety report. In an extremely serious breach, you may need to take control but only if the safety of the aircraft was clearly being compromised.
Even if the other crew member isn't being professional, you would ensure that you maintained the highest professional standards.
What is CRM?
The definition of CRM, as per CAP 737, the UK CAA's CRM Training Document, CRM can be defined as "a management system which makes optimum use of all available resources - equipment, procedures and people - to promote safety and enhance the efficiency of flight operations." It is utilised every flight.
Explain the purpose of the APU?
The APU is used to provide electrical power and air supply, primarily on the ground. The air is used for cabin cooling/heating and to start the engines. APU’s can usually operate in the air and therefore can a backup power source to the engine electrical generators. They may also be able to provide a pneumatic source whilst the aircraft is in the air.
However, the APU will have a maximum operating altitude to be used as an electrical generator and usually an even lower altitude for it to be used to supply pneumatic air. These maximum altitudes vary with aircraft type and are often below the aircraft’s typical cruise altitude.
